The Big East is not what it used to be, but sometimes it leads to some fun drama.

When the Marquette Golden Eagles take on the floor on Saturday for their regular season finale, they will be hoping to avoid a fourth straight loss as they host the hopeful Georgetown Hoyas.

There was a point during the season when Marquette won 12 of the last 13 games, including eight in a row, but that seems like a long time ago. The Golden Eagles are struggling at the worst possible time, losing three in a row over the last week.

To be fair, the calendar was slightly brutal, putting them against Villanova, Creighton and Seton Hall in consecutive games. Nova is the best team in the Big East by far, and the other two are worthy opponents.

If you think the Golden Eagles should have won at least two of those games you are right. They needed to show they belong in the conversation with the top tier teams in the nation. But they failed miserably.

Like most of the Big East, Georgetown is up and down in their recent form. They win a bunch, and they lose another bunch. Consistency is an issue inside the conference, and the Hoyas suffer from those symptoms.

They have won three of their last five while exchanging wins against DePaul. Georgetown also split the series against Villanova, Seton Hall, and Butler. That’s how they roll in the East. The first meeting of the season between Marquette and Georgetown was a thrilling 74-71 win by the Golden Eagles. Marquette was a 1.5-point favorite on the road for that game and barely covered the spread.

They are in a must-win situation after three straight losses. That makes this game fun to watch and bet on.

To make it more interesting, Georgetown allowed a season-high 101 points in the 32-point embarrassing loss against DePaul this week. Not everybody is happy with what Patrick Ewing is doing as a coach of the Hoyas.

His team is also in a position where a win is needed after such a horrible performance. But in the end, Marquette is a ranked team in a tough stretch, but they are the best team of the two. Playing at home should help them get back to the winning column.
