There is nothing like finishing the regular season trying to beat a hated rival. Michigan and Michigan State are set to clash on Saturday in the best Big Ten matchup of the weekend. Michigan comes to this game with four wins in their last five outings. Of course, their only loss in that span is more than significant. The Wolverines failed to cover as 4.5-point favorites at home by losing 77-70 to the Spartans. Michigan has been solid bet all season and mostly over the last three weeks, covering the spread in six of the previous eight games. Yet, they couldn’t deal with Michigan State.

Michigan State Tom Izzo is doing one of his usual magic tricks. Not many experts are talking about the Spartans, but they prove time and time again they are a pain to play against. When most people dish Izzo and his boys, the more dangerous they become. “I don’t need to be an underdog anymore — those days are over,” said Izzo just after beating Michigan a couple of weeks ago. “I don’t need to have anybody feel sorry for us. Those days are over. Doesn’t matter, nobody cares — put a jersey on a kid, and he goes.” The Spartans have covered the spread in five of their last seven games. In fact, they have won six of the previous seven games outright. The only team good enough to upset them was Indiana who held them to 62 points. Michigan State bounced back by destroying Nebraska 91-76 in the next game while covering the spread as a 13-point favorite.

If you had bet on the Spartans every time they were favorites this season, you would have cashed in 20 of 27 games. Michigan State would be the favorite once again on Saturday, but sweeping Michigan and their defense it is not easy. The Wolverines have the third-best scoring defense in the nation, giving up just 58.3 points per game. I would be surprised if Michigan allows the Spartans to go over 70 points as they did when they met two weeks ago. At the Breslin Center I have Michigan State winning this game, but Michigan covering the spread. What’s the play? Take Michigan with the points.
